What’s My Hair Type?
SheaMoisture Hair Type Chart – Straight to Curly Hair Types
At SheaMoisture, we believe all hair types are good hair types. You and everyone you know has natural hair that falls under a specific type. So when we create a hair care product, we do our best to inform you about what hair types respond best to that product. We created this SheaMoisture Hair Type chart to make it easier for you to choose products to enhance your curls or coils, find products suitable for all hair types or select the best mixed-hair hold product.
There are numerous schools of thought about hair types, and instead of delving into the pros and cons of each one, our hair chart represents a consensus of general opinion. Hair type is really hair structure, and we recommend embracing yours with a positive outlook. With our hair treatment and styling products, there are no limitations as to how you can style and wear your hair – use our products to be uniquely you.
Note that hair types are classified into sub-categories of A, B or C, and this is simply a way to designate the width of the hair’s wavy, curly or coil pattern.
Type 1 – Straight (1A, 1B, 1C)
Type 1 hair is straight, and this straightness allows light to easily reflect its sheen. Natural oils flow smoothly from scalp to ends, making this hair type strong and resilient. Holding a curl often requires the help of shape-defining hold styling products.
Type 1A. Hair is thin with a fine, soft texture.
Type 1B. Hair has a bit of body with a medium texture.
Type 1C. Hair is straight, but it has a coarser texture. It is very resistant to curling and requires products with stronger hold.
Type 2 – Wavy (2A, 2B, 2C)
Type 2 hair has an S-shaped pattern that puts it squarely between straight and curly types. There is some sheen visible and going between curly and straight is fairly easy to do. Frizz is more of a factor and products with anti-frizz help control the frizzing.
Type 2A. This fine-textured hair tends to be on the thin side. Going curly or perfectly straight is easy.
Type 2B. Hair has defined waves that fall close to the head.
Type 2C. This wavy hair has a coarser texture and it easily frizzes, which can be remedied with frizz control products.
Type 3 – Curly (3A, 3B, 3C)
Type 3 hair has a tighter S-shaped pattern or loose coiled pattern that looks springy (strands tend to spring back into pattern when pulled). Natural shine may be visible or muted. Controlling the frizz is a challenge that must be won.
Type 3A. Hair is loosely curled and has the most natural shine.
Type 3B. This hair can range from loose spiral ringlet curls with bounce to tight corkscrew curls. This type can easily become dry, so be sure to use products with plenty of hydration.
Type 3C. Pencil-width tight curls look their best when moisturized and defined. Frizz control is a must.
Type 4 – Coiled/Kinky (4A, 4B, 4C)
Type 4 hair is coiled/kinky due to the very tight curl pattern. Texture ranges from fine to coarse, and it may be soft or wiry. Curls are very small, defined by a coily S-shape or Z-shaped zigzag pattern. Because of its tightness, this hair type requires lots of moisture. This type also shrinks when wet.
Type 4A. Hair has dense S-shaped coils that are soft and pliable.
Type 4B. Hair is denser and thicker with a Z-shaped coil pattern.
Type 4C. This Z-pattern hair is the most fragile and prone to breakage. Leave-in conditioners keep it well nourished.
